Ecuador’s Javier Teran jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 10 break early in his match with Vietnam’s Tran Quyet Chien, but a missed chance at extending the break further allowed his opponent to the table, missing the object ball by a hair.

“I missed it by nothing and I left the game open so he could get into it really fast,” said Teran.

Chien did exactly that, using four breaks of five-or-more points to cruise to victory in his opening round match of three-cushion competition.

Chien executed a six-point break to cut his deficit to 10-9, connected on another six-pointer to tie the match 16-16 then took the lead with an eight-point break which gave him a 24-16 advantage. He then put the match out of reach with a 13-point break which increased his lead to a commanding 37-17. Meanwhile, Teran struggled to connect on many points in the second half of the match.

“I started to really struggle and he started to get confidence and make more and more balls,” said Teran.
Jose Juan Garcia 40, Tayfun Tasdemir 35
Colombia’s Jose Juan Garcia and Turkey’s Tayfun Tasdemir staged a nip-and-tuck, back-and-forth match in their opening round-of-16 match Thursday afternoon in which neither player could gain any kind of momentum as both struggled to score points. After Tasdemir used a four-break and a three-break to build a 10-5 advantage, his opponent came back with runs of four, three and five points to build a 21-15 lead at intermission.

The second half continued in much the same fashion, as the two competitors traded points and the lead down the stretch. After Garcia built a 29-22 lead, Tasdemir used a 10-break to snag a 32-29 lead, only to watch his opponent run off four straight to regain the lead, 33-32. The player from Turkey ticked off three consecutive points to snatch the lead again but Garcia followed by putting up a four-break to establish a 37-35 advantage.

Tasdemir mounted one last attempt at regaining the lead but watched as the cue ball double-kissed a moving ball and took the carom out of play.
Colombia’s Pedro Gonzalez made the most of his first appearance in the World Games, using two breaks of five points to jump out to an early lead and defeat Egypt’s Sameh Sidhom, 40-34, in a tight opening round-of-16 match Thursday evening in Birmingham.
Sidhom took an early 4-1 advantage but Gonzalez would quickly obtain a lead that he would not relinquish although the Egyptian continued to apply pressure. When the Colombian built an 11-point lead, his opponent used a 7-point break of his own to cut the deficit to a single point. However, Sidhom was never able to overtake his opponent, as the Egyptian battled a case of nerves.
“I felt like I was too stressed for the situation that I was in,” said Sidhom “I put myself under too much pressure than I should have been under.”

Kouji Funaki 40, Marco Zanetti 23

Japan’s Kouji Funaki used breaks of six, seven, nine and five points to jump out to a sizable second-half lead and defeat Italy’s Marco Zanetti in the opening round of three-cushion play Thursday evening.

After taking a brief intermission, Funaki broke the match open with a run of nine points which allowed him to build a 33-18 lead.

“After the timeout, I made a big run and that was key,” said Funaki.

Fanetti rattled off five straight points of his own to trim the deficit to 10 points but was unable to pull any closer, as Kouji used a five-point run to close out the match.

The early exit for Zanetti will means that the Italian will not be leaving the World Games with a medal for the first time in four attempts, having earned silver in Poland in 2017, Gold in Colombia in 2013 and a bronze in Taiwan in 2009.

“This game can be easy or very difficult,” Zanetti said. “This time for me it was not running the way I wish. Let’s say the luck was not on my side today and my opponent was playing very strong.”

Daniel Sanchez thought his opening round match could be a struggle – and in the opening innings, it was. However, the three-time World Games gold medalist from Spain got on a roll at a critical point in his match, posting breaks of nine and 13 to pull away from South Korea’s Chang Hoon Seo and coast to an easy 40-18 victory.

The two competitors traded points early before Sanchez posted the nine spot to build a 22-9 advantage before taking an intermission. The Spaniard opened the second half of play with a break of 13 to push his lead to a commanding 35-10. Seo wasn’t finished, running off his own break of five to cut the deficit to 35-15. He had an opportunity to continue his run but failed to make contact with the object ball as he watched the cue ball spin past it twice. Sanchez then used two innings to close out the victory.

“I was expecting a tough game because he's the number one player in Korea and Korea is a big country for carom,” said Sanchez. “But I had a good run and the right moment when I
made nine and I went a little bit further with the run of 13.”

Eddy Merckx 40-16 Erick Tellez

Belgium’s Eddy Merckx surged to an early 23-1 advantage in his round-of-16 match against Erick Tellez of Costa Rica and cruised to an easy 40-16 victory in the opening match for both players of the three-cushion competition. Despite the large deficit, the Costa Rican continue to battle, posting a break of eight of his own before Merckx closed out the set.

Merckx advances to the quarterfinals and will face Sanchez, who easily defeated Changhoon Seo in an earlier match.
Using a quick tempo and an even quicker cue ball, sixteen-time three-cushion world champion Torbjorn Blomdahl jumped out to an early 16-point lead in his opening round match against Martin Horn, then fought off a comeback by his opponent to hold onto a 40-35 victory.

As both players struggled to get a feel for the table’s playing conditions, Blomdahl took an early 22-12 advantage, then used runs of three and seven-in-a-row to build a commanding 33-16 lead.

Horn chipped away, using a seven spot of his own to narrow the deficit to eight, then scored seven of the next 10 points to cut the score to 36-35. He had an opportunity to tie the match but barely missed the red object ball with the cue ball. Blomdahl would close out the match with four straight points.
Dick Jaspers 40-11 Pedro Piedrabuena
Five-time Three-Cushion World Cup Champion Dick Jaspers used three key runs to cruise to an easy victory in his opening round match against American Pedro Piedrabuena.

After building a 9-4 advantage early, the Dutchman scored six consecutive points to push his lead to 15-4. After Piedrabuena whittled his opponent’s lead to 16-6, Jaspers again posted a six spot to increase his advantage to 22-6, then scored on 16 straight opportunities to build a commanding 38-8 lead. The American tacked on a couple more at the end but Jaspers closed out the match with back-to-back points.

“I have a satisfaction about my first performance. It's a new table. Everything is new. So, it's very unpredictable to tell you what what we can play,” said Jaspers. “I have to say that I got some good positions and I made a good profit about playing position and having some more good positions.”

The World Games 2022 is well underway in host city Birmingham, Alabama, and at the Sheraton Ballroom on Wednesday morning the Billiards program will take center stage, with medals to be won in Snooker, Carom and Men’s and Women’s Pool.

Each division features 16 players representing countries from around the world, and none has more experience of The World Games podium than three-time Gold medalist Daniel Sanchez, the Spanish Carom star who has only missed one Games since Billiards was added to the program in Akita, Japan in 2001.

The World Games began in Santa Clara, California in 1981 and just over 40 years later – delayed from 2021 because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic – the Games returns to the United
States as 3,600 athletes from over 100 countries compete across 34 unique sports.

The addition of Billiards to the program in 2001 gave opportunity to elite athletes in pool, snooker, and carom to compete alongside one another and for their countries. This year Dick Jaspers of the Netherlands will participate in carom for the sixth time, making the 2009 Gold medalist unique as the only athlete to have been ever-present in the billiards program of The World Games.

“The World Games is always a special event,” said Jaspers. “It is an honor to represent your country and it is a joy to see also the pool and snooker guys next to you.”

While Jaspers has never missed a Games, the billiards player with the most success remains Sanchez, who defeated Jaspers in the Gold medal matches of 2009 and 2017.

“The World Games is an amazing feeling because we don’t have these kind of events in billiards, where we are with pool, snooker and carom at the same place,” said Sanchez. “It is a nice experience to play.

“The first time billiards was in The World Games was 2001 and I won the final against Jaspers. The second one, 2005, was Germany and I played the final with Jaspers again, and I won again. The third one was in Taiwan, I finished fourth because I lost the semi-final to Jaspers and the third-place match against Marco Zanetti. Jaspers won that World Games.

“In Columbia, I didn’t qualify. It is difficult to win The World Games but it is also difficult to qualify because it is only 16 players and from Europe we only have five or six players depending on where the Games are. Zanetti won that one in 2013 and in 2017 I won the final against Marco Zanetti.

“It is a strange feeling as defending champion because it has been five years, but you represent your country, you are competing with athletes from lots of different sports. It is a really nice experience to just go and play, so to win a gold medal is special. I have won three gold medals from five World Games, so it is really unbelievable for me.”

In Men’s Pool, Current World Champion Shane van Boening won’t be short of supporters hoping to see him succeed in Birmingham. The American is one of the most decorated players of all time and earlier this year finally won the one major title that had continued to illude him, the WPA World 9-Ball Championship. Competing in his second World Games, a Gold medal in his home country would be the icing on what has already been a memorable year for ‘The South Dakota Kid’.

Tyler Styer, along with Hunter Lombardo, is Van Boening’s fellow American representative in Men’s Pool. The 27-year-old is making his World Games debut and the two-time Mosconi Cup champion says winning for your country is greater than any other achievement. “Playing for your country has a different feeling,” he said. “When you're playing a singles tournament you're playing for yourself but when you're playing for your country, that border is gone. It goes above and beyond winning a world title or any other major event. It's simply an honor to play for the USA.”

Jennifer Barretta and Monica Webb are the American players in the Women’s Pool division. After playing in Cali, Columbia and Wroclaw, Poland at the last two World Games, this time Webb will be much closer to home. “It’s a little weird for it to be in my back yard but I’m also very proud,” said the pool room owner from Georgia.

“All the locals in Alabama and Georgia know me so I feel no unnecessary pressure, I feel love. I expect to play really well; I’ve been playing better than I ever have in my life, and my mentality and my head is balanced. I look forward to representing and competing because of this. You never know with single elimination but I feel like I could stand on top of the podium when the smoke clears. Until then I will make every shot about the shot and stay in the moment.”
In snooker, current World Champion Ahsan Ramzan plays the first match of the competition against Aly Ahmed Elsayed. Earlier this year Ramzan became the youngest ever IBSF World Champion aged just 16, and this week has the opportunity to represent his country on this unique stage. "It is a matter of honor for me to participate in the World Games from Pakistan,” he said. “I thank god for this opportunity and I will try my best to perform and win the title.”

Also excited to represent his country his Great Britain’s Darren Morgan, who won the IBSF World Championship in 1987, 19 years before Ramzan was born. The Welshman has enjoyed a successful career in both the amateur and professional game, where we reached two ranking event titles, and is thrilled to be wearing his national flag this week.

“Invites like this don’t come around too often,” said Morgan. “The World Games is something I have never done before and I never thought I would get to do as I’m one of the old dogs these days. I have represented Wales over the years but I never thought I would get to wear the GB badge and it is an honor and a privilege to be part of Team GB.
“In a best of five it is about coming out of the block quickly and getting your opponent under pressure. I want to go out and enjoy it because this is a really good opportunity. This is the most prestigious event as an amateur you can play in, it is close to the feeling of an Olympic Games.”
