Ankara, May 4th 2025.
One of the great venues in our sport is the billiard complex proudly built by the Turkish Federation in Ankara, a model for the world. From 9 – 15 June it will once again host a World Cup, the third in the 2025 cycle. To refresh your memory: the win in Bogotá went to Thanh Luc Tran, the tournament in Ho Chi Minh was won by Dick Jaspers.
The Turks, not unlike the Koreans, appear to have an endless supply of talent. A World Cup in their own back yard should give them a chance to shine in the qualifying rounds and maybe even the main event. The relatively easy trip from Western Europe helps to also bring in players from the Low Countries, France, Germany, Austria and Denmark. We warmly welcome the Asian hopefuls who have made the long journey.
The UMB has seeded the following players for Ankara: Jaspers, M.W. Cho, Merckx, Q.C. Tran, T.L. Tran, Tasdemir, Zanetti, Sidhom, Kiraz, J.H. Heo, Horn, B. Karakurt, P.V. Bao and H.C. Thai. The local wildcards went to Gokhan Salman and Yilmaz Özcan, the UMB/CPB wildcard was given to Javier Vera from Mexico.
The tables in Ankara are Zeki Bilardo, the cloth is Simonis 330 Prestige, the balls are Dynaspheres. As usual, the ranking points at stake are 80-54-36-26-18-10-8. In the race for the overall World Cup for 2025, Jaspers leads with 116 points, ahead of Thanh Luc Tran with 88, Tasdemir with 72 and Jung Han Heo with 64. The cycle will continue with events in Porto (July), Antwerp (October), Korea (November) and Egypt (December).
All matches will be streamed by Soop. Full results are available on the websites of Five & Six and the UMB. There’s a one-hour time difference between Ankara and (for instance) Paris.
