From the qualification rounds that have been played to the matches of 30 points with eventual equalizing innings, we can retain a meritorious second place for Venezuela (with a general team average of 1,388), Egypt and The B team of the Netherlands. Already during these qualifications, some players put themselves on the spot with high runnings, such as Ronny Lindemann (Germany B) with a run of 13 and averages such as René Hendriksen’s (Switzerland) 1,950.
We noted also the somewhat surprising elimination of Sweden and France.
From Saturday on, the Quarter finals started with the draw for the winning teams that had to compete from now on to 40 points with eventual equalizing innings and possible penalties.
Despite the 2,076 of ArnimKahofer, Austria was not able to stop the strong German A-team.
With the match of the Netherlands A against Belgium, many people present assumed this to be the advanced final match. In any case, one can say that this was the most intense match possible. A very strong playing Raymond Burgman got through a drawn against Frédéric Caudron and Dick Jaspers (who performed an amazing highest run of the championship during the qualification round of 22), finally had to recognize his defeat against Eddy Merckx with a very close 38-40.
A strong playing TonnyCarlsen (win against French Jérémy Bury with 30-14 in the qualification round) could not avoid defeat against Korea.
Murat NaciCoklu won against Ruben Legazpi and Turkish TayfunTasdemir followed Spanish Daniel Sanchez very closely, which earned Turkey a place in the ½ final.
On Sunday morning, Germany seemed poised for a rather easy win against Turkey but during the match both Turkish players came again in the match and Martin Horn needed a win in 20 innings against TayfunTasdemir in order to secure a place in the final.
Frédéric Caudron ran over his Korean opponent Jung Han Heo with 40-10 in 13 innings, which made the end of the match between Eddy Merckx and Kyung Roul Kim unnecessary.
The final was played in a full house with plenty of supporters of both teams who provided a noisy but very sportive support and a fantastic atmosphere.
Both matches where very tied until about 2/3 of the points. Frédéric Caudron could finally secure the difference with a 40-30 win against Christian Rudolph and Martin Horn, who was fighting a close battle until the end against Eddy Merckx. However, at the end of Caudron’s match, the total score was 32-31, which rendered Belgium a very deserved World Champion for the second time in a row against runner up Germany (also already for the second time in a row).
During the Closing Ceremony, the Town of Viersen was congratulated for the perfect organization of this 24th World Championship for National Teams and the Mayor declared himself and his team ready for the upcoming celebration of the 25th Championship in the year 2014.
