WCBS Championship 2023 in Ankara, Turkey
Asia B beats Europe B in a final thriller
Today the first WCBS-Championship of the World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS) ended in Ankara/Turkey. Over four days, the spectators saw great billiards sport in four different disciplines on site and in the total of eight livestreams.
A team consisted of eight sportsmen and sportswomen, with Pool, Snooker, 3-Cushion and Heyball being played.
In the final, the B-Teams from Europe and Asia faced each other. While the Europeans were superior in Pool-Billiards due to the victories of Sara Rocha (Portugal) and Poland's Konrad Juszczyszyn, the Asians won both matches in 3-Cushion. Kim Haengjik and Yuko Nishimoto scored for their team.
In Heyball, Shi TianQi (China) put the Asians in the lead, but Sanjin Pehlivanovic (Bosnia & Herzegovina) equalized for the Europeans again. That left everyone looking to the two Snooker tables, where Amir Sarkhosh (Iran) restored the Asian lead with a 3:2-win over Liam Davies (Wales).
Meanwhile, in the women's event, Ewa Pawinska (Poland) was leading 2:1 Frames against Vidya Pillai (India) and was clearly on the winning track to 3:1. But as she committed a few fouls in the final phase of the frame, Pillai suddenly had the chance to equalize.
She actually managed to do so a few moments later, and as a 3:2-win for Pawinska would not have been enough for the Europeans to win the match due to the secondary score, the match was concluded. Thus, Team Asia B became the winner of the first ever WCBS Championship!
Earlier today, the two semifinals and the match for third place were as well unrivalled in terms of excitement.
In the first semifinal, the two European teams faced each other. After the eight games, the score was tied 4:4, so the secondary score had to decide between victory and defeat. Here, Europe B had a very narrow lead and entered the final.
The second semifinal between Asia A and Asia B was exactly the same. Once again, the score was tied after the eight matches and once again it was the so-called B team that emerged victorious in the end.
In the match for third place, Europe A and Asia A faced each other and how could it be otherwise, the teams were so evenly matched that the bottom line was a 4:4 draw. In the secondary score, Asia A had the better one and thus won the bronze medal at the premiere of the WCBS Championship.
Fifth and sixth places went to Africa & Rest of the World and Team Americas. After all six teams had first played for the semifinals in a round-robin-system, these two teams failed to make the cut.

WCBS Championship 2023 in Ankara, Turkey
DAY 3
The four semi-finalists have been determined
Today the four semi-finalists were determined at the WCBS Championship.
A total of six teams from all continents competed in Ankara, Türkiye, in a round-robin mode over the past three days. Today, the last five matches were on the agenda before the two semi-finals, the match for third place and the finals will be played tomorrow.
In the first match today, Asia A celebrated a clear victory against Africa & Rest of the World. Only Meng-Hsia Hung (Australia) was able to win a game for her team, almost all other matches went to the Asians. Only Robbie Capito (Philippines) played a draw against Clark Sullivan from New Zealand in Men's Pool.
Between Asia B and Europe B, the Asians gained a nice lead in Snooker and Heyball with four wins. Meanwhile, Europe B secured the points in the two 3-Cushion games while they drew the Men's Pool and Silviana Lu (Indonesia) scored another point for Team Asia B in Women's Pool.
In the third match of the day, Americas fought Europe A and also scored a win in Men's Heyball through Alejandro Carvajal (Chile). But more than two more draws in Women's Pool and Men's Snooker were not to be achieved in the end. The Europeans proved to be the better team in 3-Cushion as well as in the Women's Snooker, Men's Pool and Women's Heyball.
The following match between Asia A and Europe B was unrivalled in terms of excitement. In 3-Cushion and Snooker both teams shared the points, but in Heyball, the Asians managed to celebrate two more wins. Thus, the decision was made in Pool. Konrad Juszczyszyn (Poland) scored another important win for the Europeans, but Sara Rocha (Portugal) drew against Annita Kan Jaya (Indonesia), so that the bottom line was a razor-thin victory for Asia A.
The last match of the day was Africa & Rest of the World against the Asian B-Team. While in 3-Cushion Africa & Rest of the World managed a win and a draw, the Asians managed exactly the same in Snooker. So, everyone was looking at the matches in Pool and Heyball. In the latter, the Asians won both matches, while Clark Sullivan (New Zealand) won another match in Pool for Africa & Rest of the World. However, since Meng-Hsia Hung (Australia) was defeated by Silviana Lu (Indonesia), the overall victory for Asia B was certain.
Therefore, Europe A, Europe B, Asia A and Asia B have reached the semi-finals, while Africa & the Rest of the World and the Americas are out of the competition. In the semi-finals tomorrow, Europe A will meet Europe B and Asia A will face Asia B.

DAY 2.
Top billiards show on the second day
The World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS), is hosting its own championship for the first time in its history.
On the second day of this world-class event, the next preliminary round matches of all the six teams were on the agenda. The day opened with a clash between Asia A and Europe A. In 3-Cushion both teams shared the points, but in Pool, the Asians prevailed through Robbie Capito (Hong Kong, China) and Annita Kan Jaya (Indonesia). With only Wendy Jans (Belgium) able to draw for Europe in Snooker, Europe now desperately needed to score in Heyball, but in the end only Kelly Fisher (Great Britain) could leave the table as a winner.
Between Team Americas and Asia B, the decision was in favor of Asia B on the Snooker tables and also in Heyball. The Asians won all four matches, so the wins of Jackeline Perez (Peru) and Hunter Lombardo (USA) in 3-Cushion and Pool were not enough for Team Americas to change the overall result in favor of Asia B.
The match between Africa & Rest of the World against the European B-Team was extremely exciting. In 3-Cushion Sameh Sidhom (Egypt) achieved a win against the multiple time World Champion Dick Jaspers (Netherlands). However, with only one other match win by Meng-Hsia Hung (Australia) and two draws in the Men's Snooker and Men's 10-Ball Pool for Africa & Rest of the World, the Europeans ended up ahead in the overall result.
In the match between Europe A and Asia B, the games in 3-Cushion and Snooker went in favor of the Europeans, giving them a nice lead. Asia B, however, fought back with two wins in Heyball and also won the Men's Pool. In the end, Kristina Zlateva (Bulgaria) managed a draw against Silviana Lu (Indonesia), so that Europe A finally took a very narrow victory.
A very clear affair was the last match of the day between Team Americas and Asia A. In Snooker, Pool and Heyball, the Asians were mostly superior, while Americas only managed to win a match in 3-Cushion through Jackeline Perez (Peru).
Tomorrow, Saturday, the last matches in the round-robin mode will be played before the two semi-finals and the finals are scheduled for Sunday.

The World Confederation of Billiards Sports (WCBS), is hosting its own championship for the first time in its history, which kicked off today in Ankara, Türkiye.
This high-class event is held with the support of the Turkish Billiards Federation (TBF) and unites athletes from more than 40 countries and all relevant billiards disciplines worldwide under one roof.
A total of six teams are at the start, whereby special importance is placed on a balanced mix of genders, so that sportswomen and sportsmen from Pool Billiards, Heyball, 3-Cushion and Snooker take part in this event.
Already in the early morning, during the opening ceremony and the subsequent photo session for the press, a high spirit among the athletes was noticeable. Everyone was looking forward to finally swinging the cue in their respective discipline and playing in the impressive arena with a total of eight billiard tables.
The teams will play in a round-robin mode on the first three days, before the semi-finals and the finals scheduled on Sunday.
The day started with Team Americas against Africa & Rest of the World. In both 3-Cushion and Snooker, Africa & Rest of the World showed superiority and won all four games. In Pool and Heyball, the Americas’ athletes were tied, but eventually, it was an overall victory for Africa & Rest of the World.
Next up were the interesting duels between the two European and two Asian teams. Europe A and Europe B were tied for a long time in their match, which finally culminated in a draw in the Women's Pool between Kristina Zlateva (Bulgaria) and Sara Rocha from Portugal. But at the end, it was Europe A who had the upper hand.
The match between Asia A and Asia B was exciting as well. While the points were shared in 3-Cushion, Snooker and Heyball, the pool matches were decided in favour of Asia B. Badar Alawadhi (Kuwait) and Silviana Lu (Indonesia) prevailed in their matches and sealed their victories.
In the late afternoon, the fourth match of the day pitted Europe A against Africa & Rest of the World. Both teams had been victorious in the opener and an exciting match was expected. While the Africa & Rest of the World was superior in 3-Cushion, Europe A secured the points in Snooker. In Pool, both games ended in a draw, so the decision had to be made in Heyball. After the victory of Kelly Fisher (Great Britain), Saki Kanatlar (Turkey), kept his nerve and gave Europe A the much needed edge.
The last match of the day between Europe B and Americas was a clear affair. The Europeans won both games in 3-Cushion and Snooker and added more points with victories in the Men's Pool and the Men's Heyball. Americas drew in Women's Pool and won the only match in the Women's Heyball.
